The Years

by Jamie McKendrick

Winner of the Michael Marks Illustration Award

Short-listed for the Michael Marks Poetry Pamphlet Award

With a number of highly-acclaimed poetry collections to his name, this well-known poet has produced a chapbook of enigmatic and beautifully-crafted poems, each of which is accompanied by an illustration by the poet who reveals himself as an accomplished artist. This will undoubtedly be a collector's piece.

‘A coolly marshalled, worldly intelligence
seems to be able to take on any subject from
the quotidian to the arcane. The language is
alert to contemporary nuance and opulently,
exhilaratingly multi-layered.’

William Boyd, Observer

Jamie McKendrick’s chapbook sees poem and
image combining in an unusually close relationship.
The work of a single author, it represents a kind of
internal, two-way translation, with illustration and
written word approaching the same material in
ways that can enlarge or contract the focus. The
work is both panoramic and microscopic, ranging
from ‘unmeasured space’ to ‘the smallest bug’; from
contemporary Liverpool to Nasrid Granada.
Although the chapbook’s title, The Years, suggests
reminiscence, both poems and images are as
engaged with the present moment as with the past.

‘[Jamie McKendrick is] as rare and endangered
a species as you’re likely to find in British poetry
– formally brilliant, unblushingly learned,
emotionally engaged.’
