Inside Voices, Outside Light
by Sigurdur Pálsson
Bilingual English / Icelandic edition
Translated and introduced by Martin Regal
Part of our Arc Translations series edited by Jean Boase-Beier
Sigurđur Pálsson is one of Iceland's best-known and most highly-regarded poets, and Inside Voices Outside Light is the first full-length collection of his poetry to be published in English translation.
Selected by the poet and translator from eleven books of poetry published between 1980 and 2012, these poems swirl with imagery and energy, revealing a poet who writes with fluidity and constraint, whose style has been described as combining immediacy, impressionism and enthusiasm. Some of the poems in this collection are in tightly-tuned metre, others are prose poems and yet others focus on brevity and nuance. Throughout, ideas run amok, views close and open, space is compressed so the various fabrics of the world are folded into each other, creating a causal layering of the natural and man-made.
This is a thrilling sweep across Pálsson's work and through Martin Regal's translation, the English-speaking world at last has access to a uniquely Icelandic poetic voice.
