Ludwig Steinherr, from Before the Invention of Paradise

Homo sapiens

Der auf Knien der
mit einer Zahnbürste
das Pflaster scheuern muß —

Die in den Schaftstiefeln
ihr dröhnendes Gelächter —

Der Philosoph der lehrt
der Mensch sei das
Tier
das lachen kann

Homo sapiens

The man down on his knees who's fated
to scrub the cobblestones
with a toothbrush —

The men in jack-boots
their booming guffaws —

The philosopher who teaches
that man is the
animal
gifted with laughter
