Petr Halmay, from Six Czech Poets

Bylo Až Nesnesitelné Vidět Zas Sebe Sama

Večerní slunce padalo korunami.
Kropilo cestičky a zídky pod kopcem...

Město však bylo dosud v pohybu.
žár tepal v prasklině červencového dne.

Najednou jako by nebylo už co říct.
Všechno se zdálo dávno vyslovené...

Bylo až nesnesitelné vidět zas sebe sama.

A řídký červánek táhnout se po nebi
jak na počátku světa.

It was unbearable to see oneself

Speckles of evening sunlight fell through the trees
on to the paths and stone walls at the foot of the hill...

But the city was still in motion.
Heat pulsated in the crack of a July day.

Suddenly, there was nothing more to say,
everything seemed to have been said...

It was unbearable to see oneself again.

A thin red cloud stretched across the sky
as if at the beginning of the world.
