From PROFESSOR DANIEL WEISSBORT, former co-editor, with Ted Hughes, of Modern Poetry in Translation
I am writing in support of Arc to the Art Council application for a grant in aid. This little publisher has done great work in furthering translation, which after the demise of my own magazine, MPT, greatly needs help. Translation is an un-trendy art, but will die for lack of support. Poetry will be confind to the linguistic realm of the source works. I believe the Art Council should oppose this trend.
Hence this letter of support for Arc which, especially with its bilingual series is doing such a worthwhile job. For example, Arc publication of my translations of Inna Lisnianskaya’s poems reached the Archbishop of Canterbury who translated a few more of her poem from the Russian which he knows well. He dedicated his own poem to Lisnianskaya.
