I have been dismayed and shocked by the news that Arc, one of the country`s best small poetry publishers, will lose all Arts Council Funding from next year. For some years, Arc has specialised in particular in the introduction of poetry translated from other languages, not only from Europe but also from every part of the world - surely an activity of great importance in the present day, and to be encouraged by a government which claims to believe in broadening contact and understanding between people and cultures. I add my name to the many others asking for this decision - hasty and ill-considered as it seems - to be withdrawn and rescinded.
