From C.K. STEAD ONZ, CBE, FRSL, Professor Emeritus, University of Auckland
I am appalled and distressed to hear that Arc is to lose its Arts Council funding. I write from New Zealand, but even in this far away part of the English-speaking world Arc is recognized and honoured for its role in keeping poetry in English, and poetries in translation, alive and well. Its services over many years have been immeasurable, and the decision to cut its funding will have regrettable, and surely avoidable, consequences for literature in the English language and for the central role Britain has always played in its good health and on-going development. Please listen to those of us who want at this time of cuts to speak up for Arc and the good work it has done.
