The Music of the Prophets: The Resettlement of the Jews in England, 1655-56

Michelene Wandor

The Music of the Prophets: The Resettlement of the Jews in England, 1655-56

In 1290 the Jews were banished from England. In 1655-56, Jews once more became a part of British society, returning to the London of Oliver Cromwell, Samuel Pepys and Henry Purcell. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of this return, Michelene Wandor has written a sensuous dramatic narrative poem, evoking seventeenth-century London, and telling the story of the two men who made this return possible: Cromwell and Menasseh Ben Israel.

Circus-Apprentice

Katherine Gallagher

Circus-Apprentice

In her new collection, Katherine Gallagher draws on a rich inheritance from her different worlds: Australia, Britain - particularly London - and France. Her subject matter ranges widely: travel, exile, returning, change, nature, war, family, illness, love, loss, death and childhood experiences, always rooted in a passionate sense of discovery and attention to place. She juxtaposes a mix of colloquial and more formal verse-styles to evoke immediacy and feeling with impressive clarity and freshness of voice. Lyrical and politically-tuned, her poems range between moments of deep feeling and satire, laced with an often wry humour veering towards the surreal.

Twenty Four Preludes and Fugues on Dmitri Shostakovich

Joanna Boulter

Twenty Four Preludes and Fugues on Dmitri Shostakovich

The author writes: "In 1994 I read a review by Peter Conrad, in The Observer, of Elizabeth Wilson's Shostakovich: A Life Remembered. As its title suggests, this is a compendium of personal reminiscences by relatives, friends and acquaintances of the composer. The glimpses of Shostakovich's life which the review quoted caught my imagination as a possible subject for poetry, and I began what quickly became a lengthy project. Conrad's reference to Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues Op.87 for piano gave me my format.

The Book of Belongings

Brian Johnstone

The Book of Belongings

The Book of Belongings reads like an archaeology of the lost, its pages uncovering and observing what has vanished, died or been abandoned. Battlefields, remote landscapes, pre-war classrooms, nightmares of childhood, the past with all its demons and sad domestic litanies, all are here, vanished histories given a voice by this accomplished poet.
