Beautiful Things
The Dutch poet, anthologist and translator Menno Wigman died in 2018 at just fifty-one, several years after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition likely caused by an allergic reaction suffered in his adolescence.
This memorial pamphlet is intended as a tribute to the poet and as a companion to Window-cleaner Sees Paintings, my selection of Wigman's poetry published by Arc in 2016.

Bigger than the Facts
Jan Baeke, the award-winning Dutch poet, has, in Bigger Than The Facts (Groter dan de feiten, 2007), created an intriguing filmic world in which tensions are rife and nothing is quite as it seems. It is a world whose elements keep recurring, coalescing little by little into dreamlike leitmotifs — a bus journey, a hotel room, dogs, cigarettes, fire, a blind man, a canary, a man and a woman in love. And love, however fragile it may be, is a major theme of this collection, for "where there's fire, there's warmth for two".
Antoinette Fawcett's poetically sensitive translation gives a clear sense of Baeke's style and poetic drive, and enables the English-speaking reader to explore in full this key collection in Baeke's œuvre.

The Lonely Funeral
Every year, a large number of people living in our towns and cities - the homeless, suicides, illegal immigrants, junkies, drug 'mules', victims of crime and, above all, old people living alone - are found dead. Sometimes, they are not discovered for weeks or months, and it is often hard to ascertain who they are. Their funerals are held without relatives or friends and acquaintances being present; the only people in attendance are the pall-beares, perhaps someone from the Department of Social Services, the cemetery management and the funeral director. In Amsterdam in 2002, the poet and artist F Starik, deeply moved by the desolation of these solitary funerals, initiated 'The Lonely Funeral' project and seven years later in Antwerp, the Flemish poet Maarten Inghels set up a project of the same name.

Selected Poems
Georges Rodenbach was a leading literary figure during the epoch of symbolism in late nineteenth-century France and Belgium. This is the first-ever collection of Rodenbach's poetry to be published in English translation. He is most famous for his fin-de-siècle novel Bruges-la-Morte (1892), but it is in the lesser-known collections of poetry that his mystical articulation of the ambiance of a decaying Bruges reaches its zenith.

Emile Verhaeren: Poems
Dubbed the 'European Walt Whitman', Emile Verhaeren is a pro-European idealist, whose poetry explores his overriding notion of mankind advancing to a promised land where vital creative energies and new technology could combine to produce a more progressive human strain, a hope ignominiously swept away by the industrial brutality of the First World War.

Carème is considered to be one of Belgium's master poets, and 'Defying Fate' (published posthumously) is a fascinating introduction to his work. At the Edge of Night
At the Edge of Night brings to an English readership for the first time the recent work of Anise Koltz, Luxembourg's best-known poet. With their short, unpunctuated lines, powerful language and pulsing with an anger and raw emotion directed both at the poet herself and at the world at large, these poems are 'knife-sharp, clear and dazzling'.
